The setup....

I have recently taken over what is begining to look like a complete mess!

There is 2 servers 1 running windows 2000 Server & Exchange 2000, another
Server running windows 2003. It looks as though the previous IT person has
for some reason seized the FSMO roles as the Windows 2003 server can not
communicate with the Global Catalogue and a number of other strange
instances keep occuring!.

What I would like to do is the following load Exchange 2003 on to the Server
running Windows 2003 and then transfer over the exchange system from the
windows 2000/Exchange 2000 server. I have information on transfering the
Exchange from the Windows 2000 machine to the Windows 2003 server and
loading Exchange. What I am conserned about is the problems with the FSMO
roles and Global Catalogue. Can anyone suggest any solutions or
doscumentation?

Can anyone assist/advise me on this one as I am sure that it is not going to
be as simple as it sounds, does anyone have any recommendations? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Kind Regards

Hi Simon,

I have few questions for you before I can offer you any more help:
* are both servers domain controllers?
* how is DNS setup for Active Directory?
* where do domain controller(s) look for DNS (e.g. preferred DNS servers
options under TCP/IP properties)?

Mike,

Both Servers are Domain Controllers.
DNS is setup for Active Directory.
Prefered DNS server is Windows 2003 Server

Hope this helps.

Can you also let us know how are Global Catalogs setup? Are both servers
also GCs?

I believe only the Windows 2000 Server is setup as a global catalog.

Simon

Can you check this and make sure...

Here is how:

How To Create or Move a Global Catalog in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313994

Steps are practically the same on Windows 2000 and Windows 2003.

Mike,

The Global Catalog is definitely on the Windows 2000 Machine not the Windows
2003 machine!

Thanks

Simon
