I wonder if others have the same problems with speed as I have with
Demon's Broadband?

As part of the survey on broadband speeds actual v.v. advertised the
Gadget Show on Channel Five has set up a speed test. Below are my
findings. Right now I am NOT a happy Demon customer.

See: http://gadgetshow.five.tv/jsp/speed_test.htm

ISP: Demon Home 8000

Advertised speed (i.e. up to 8Mb): The service operates downstream at
up to a 8Mbps(*) and upstream at up to 448kbps. (*) Refers to maximum
downstream line speeds only.

Actual Download Speed: 656 kbps (82 KB/sec transfer rate)

Actual Upload Speed: 353 kbps (44.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Comments: This is appalling. I did the test at 23.15 on 12/11/2007.
The PC was only running this test. I live about 500 yards from the
main BT exchange at Heathrow Airport.

The Demon website states: "The service operates downstream at up to a
8Mbps(*) and upstream at up to 448kbps. (*) Refers to maximum
downstream line speeds only. The actual speed you experience will be
subject to certain conditions and depends on a number of factors,
including your distance from the telephone exchange and the quality of
the wiring in between."

Yet I would assume that being near the main Heathrow Exchange that the
quality of the wiring would be a tad higher than most.

The GS speed test is just rubbish - it's being hammered by everybody & so it
shows very slow speeds sometimes and decent ones at others.

It's just showing how bad their Internet supplier/host is at supplying
bandwidth to other ISPs.

That would ALSO be the sign of you using a rubbish ISP.

I'll try it from my IDnet connection at several times of the day and see if I
get that too.

I got 6672kbps on my 8Mb Newnet connection but I am very close to the
local BY exchange :-)
The upload test didn't initialise and now the upload test hangs as well.
Probably something my fairly high level security doesn't like.

i got 436k download (or something near) on my 8 meg connection, the site was
broken yesterday! downloaded a file immediately after at 667kbs.
hope they dont use any info they get from last night on the show, cos the
speed tests will give bad data!

I'd agree - they seem to be using speedtest.net, but not sure what node you
connect to etc. Last night I tried a couple of runs on speedtest.net's own
site and got just over 4000kbps. Tried the GS one immediately after and got
around 900kbps!
Mind you, tried the gadget show one this morning at 7am and got over
6000kbps so who knows.

Same here (upload not working), and that's due to my settings in The
Proxomitron; bypass it and D/L runs OK.
I'd rather have the security than run dubious tests.
