Replacing W2K DC with W2K3 DC

I've got a small office network running a single W2K server that handles all
domain chores. I am replacing this with a new machine on which I will
install Win 2003 Server and will want to have the new server replace the old
server entirely, including having it handle all of the domain chores. I have
only a couple of users so am not concerned about migrating huge AD databases
or whatever to the new machine. I can recreate that all manually. What order
of steps should I use to demote old server and cut over to the new server?
Thanks for any pointers. -- tom c

1. Load it up,...Static TCP/IP settings,...use existing DC for DNS
2. Join it to the existing Domain
3. Install DNS on it, leave DNS "unconfigured". Good idea to have WINS too.
4. Run DCPromo, make it a DC of an *exisitng* Domain. During the process
tell it to use itself for the DNS Server. Use both itself and the old
one in the
TCP/IP settings for DNS.
5. Take a break, maybe an hour or so,...replication will be completed and
settled down.
6. Run DCPromo on the old DC and reduce it down to a member server.
Adjust TCP/IP settings on all machines to look for the new DC/DNS
instead of
the old one. If you use DHCP, adjust the scope to match. Reboot the
Clients to get new
updated TCP/IP config.
7. Manually make the new DC a Catalog Server. All the other roles will
automatically be
moved when DCPromo runs in step #6.
8. All done.

So maybe it would be a good idea to do the global catalog xfer BEFORE he
dcpromo's down the original DC? Member servers can't hold the GC.

Joshua,
Can you be specific as to what steps are suggesting to change, using
Phillip's step numbers if possible? Very much appreciated. -- tom c

That's what I usually do anyway. But I don't think the GC is
"transfered",..it is just simply "created",...so it doesn't matter. You can
even make all DC to be GCS's all at the same time and it works,...the GC
isn't "replicated" or anything, as far as I know.

He's just sayinf that you would make the new DC a Global Catalog Server even
while the old one still also a Global Catalog Server. It doesn't change
anything I suggested.

I'm actually in the process of working through these instructions and ran
into this problem. dcpromo failed because i had not prepped the Win2000
domain for Win2003 AD. The error pointed me to adprep, so I ran adprep
/forestPrep on the Win2000 DC. adprep fails with this message:

ERROR: Failed to transfer the schema FSMO role: 52 (Unavailable). If the
error code is "Insufficient Rights", make sure you are logged in as a member
of the schema admin group. Adprep was unable to upgrade the schema on the
schema master.

I'm stuck as to what to do next. Your suggestion? I'm in a pickle because
I'm on site for only a couple days to get this working. Thanks for any help
you can provide. -- tom c

Hmmm......

Can you use DC Promo to reverse the new machine and get back to where you
started with only the one original old DC? If you can do that,...then do an
inplace upgrade of the old DC to bring it up to 2003,...then add the new DC
accoriding to the steps I gave, and roll the old one back to a member
server.

Actually I think you better get a second opinion from other guys in
here,...or call PSS and get someone who specializes in AD migrations. It is
kinda hard to fix AD once you thourghly screw it up.
