Replacing a W2K DC with a 2003 DC (with same name)

* I have 5 Windows2000 DC's in my native Windows2000 AD (single domain).

* I want to rebuild one of the DC's as a Windows2003 DC, but preserving its
computer name.

* I don't want to do an upgrade. I want to wipe the disk and do a fresh
install of Win2003, and then dcpromo to a DC.

The above would be easy if the new DC was to have a new name. How do I go
about this, such that I end up with a Win2003 DC having the same name as the
old Win2000 DC?

Thanks kindly,
FW

It's just as easy using the same name, but be aware that doing so will
effectively upgrade your entire AD to Windows 2003 so it's a step that
requires careful planning and consideration. Don't just do it on a whim or
because you want to check out Windows 2003.

This is a rough guide to the tasks required:

1. run domainprep and forestprep in the 2000 domain
2. remove any FSMO roles, networking services, user data etc. from the soon
to be blitzed server
3. run dcpromo on the 2000 server to bring it down to a member server
4. turn off the 2000 member server and delete the computer account, wait for
the deletion to replicate
5. rebuild the member server as a 2003 server using the same name as before
6. dcpromo the 2003 server to be a DC
