Replacing the DC,...no problem. DCPromo the new in and set as CG,...Set the
old as not a CG,...maybe wait a day then DCPromo the old out. The DCPromo
process should move the FSMO roles automatically (it just doesn't do the CG
part).
Replacing Exchange,...big disaster. You can't simply "replace" it.
1. You have to bring a second Exchange into the "Exchange Site"
2. Move the Mailboxes to the new one
3. Outlook clients will automatically move the the new Exchange when the
mailbox is moved.
4. Other types of clients will need manual switching (It ain't just about
IP#s).
5. Replicate Public Folders to the new box.
6. Old Exchange is still the one that routes the mail to the new one even
after all the mailboxes and folders are moved, so that functioanlity needs
to be properly and cleanly moved to the second one.
7. After all that there is a specific process to remove "the first Exchange
Server from a site".
There may be a way to do it with a Exchange Database Backup where you backup
the database from the Old and then Restore it into the new. But get ready
for a massive disater if things goe wrong.
Get help from people who specialize in Exchange. Don't take it lightly. It
is very easy to screw up and nearly impossible to correct.
The machine will *Not* have the same name an IP# when you are done becuase
both old and new are running together for probably several days during the
process. Changing the IP# and name of the server after the fact may cause
you *more* problems (particularly the name). I usually name my machines
with their Serial Number anyway so the name has no "human meaning" and it is
handy on support calls because it is easy to know what the Serial Number is
when support askes for it
