Replace DNS with WINS - rhetorical hypothesis

Experts.

Rhetorical question for you. What happens if ones turn off DNS in a Windows
20003 domain and uses only WINS. I know you *can't* do this as AD
*requires* DNS, but like I said this is rhetorical. Would all of AD come to
a screeching halt? Would clients be unable to logon? I mean after all,
WINS can contain the entry for the 1B and 1C domain netbios name and pass
that on to resolving clients, and would they or would they not be able to
find/log on to a domain controller? Think of this as a mental exercise.
Kudos will be given to the best answer!!!

Spin.... have you tried it? You know A requires DNS, as we've talked about
in your other posts! :-)
IIRC, can't login if a user, but if admin, it will use cache credentials
from previous logon attempt.

AD will come to a disfunctional state, especially if more
that one DC exists in the forest.
Login may failover, slowly, to success based on WINS,
but once logged in simple things like managing group
members, etc. will fail.
You should examine fact that AD uses kerberos and ldap,
and the location of service points for these is done using
the DNS SRV resource records, something which WINS
cannot provide.

AD uses DNS for more than just resolving A records for IP addresses,
which is basicly what WINS provided, which is why it would fail with
no DNS server.
