The speed given is the speed of the USB 2 link between your PC and the
wireless adapter. If you hard wire connected it to a router you'd get
100mbps (or 10mbps dependent on settings and hardware) and if it showed the
correct speed of your wireless networking it would be either 11, 22, or 54
mbps. Your main router will connect at the correct speed. Go to
www.adslguide.org.uk and run the speedtests to see what you get. 11mbs is a
good speed for general use like you describe.

One of those things it seems Microsoft would like us to easily do. Mostly a
case of clicking yes to a few questions.

What's the spec of this machine? A low spec machine (in this case I'd say
pretty much anything less than a P3) may have difficulty and would function
better with an ethernet or hardware based PCI adapter. Also, there may be a
known compatability problem so any info you can give about specific hardware
would be helpful (ie. mobo model number, wireless adapter model number
etc...) VIA based motherboards are the worst for these sort of USB problems
in general. If this machine is near the router you may chose to buy a cheap
ethernet cable and use that instead of wireless. Much cheaper and more
reliable.
Don't worry about it. If I would recommend anything it would be forget the
USB adapters and get a ethernet to wireless adapter or a PCI inside card
(ensuring the chipset is well designed and uses DMA etc and doesn't take CPU
cycles...) but if it works don't worry. Of these two, an ethernet would
remove all the worry.
BTW it sometimes helps if you try a brief description of your problem in the
subject and I'm not entirely certain what model of router you are using....
Another thing you can do which may help the situation is going to the
website of the wireless access point (or wireless ADSL router) and get the
latest firmware and follow upgrade instructions.... This sometimes
(unfortunately) results in the need to re-configure everything.
