We have old domain name information in our AD from the old NT 4.0 domain.
When we migrated to W2K3 server, we did a domain name change. Can I use the
new tool rendom.exe /clean to remove the old domain name information from AD?

I don't think you can use rendom to do that unless you used rendom to rename
your domain but that does not sound like the case. You could look at using
ntdsutil.exe to cleanup the metadata as described in the link below. Be SURE
to make a backup of the System State on a couple domain controllers first
just in case things do not go quite right so you have a backup plan. Backing
up the System State on a domain controller also backs up Active Directory.
You may also want to post in an Active Directory newsgroup. --- Steve

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240363 -- works same in Windows 2003.

Should this be done on an off hours basis? What are the impact on resources?
Does it need to be run on more than one DC? Would it require replication time
for our remote sites?

I have never had to do such myself, I know it can be done with ntdsutil.exe
and you may want to post in an Active Directory newsgroup also to get
feedback from those who have cleaned up the metadata in a larger domain. As
long as that old domain is not being used for anything it should not
interfere with access to resources. It should not need to be run on each dc
and would replicate like anything else which you could check after a period
of time. Site replication would happen per site replication schedule. ---

I have run the ntdsutil.exe, when I run 'list domains in site' at the 'select
operation target' prompt it only show one domain, which is what we have.
However when I go into ADSI edit under Configuration>Services>Microsoft
Exchange>Site>Address List Container>Recipient Update Service I still find
CN=Recipient Update Service (OldDomainName). It will not allow me to update
it here, because only the system can update it. How can I correct this?

Hi Frank.

I don't know the answer to that offhand. An Active Directory newsgroup for
win2000 or server may be able to help you out on that. -- Steve
