Renaming Computer to Solve Connectivity Issue

Hello,

I read on one of the online bulletins that if your
computer name is more than 15 letters or has symbols in
it that this can cause connectivity issues for remote
computers on the Microsoft MN-700. I want to know what
will happen if I try this...potential issues, headaches,
etc.

I have a desktop which has a direct connection to one of
the router ports on the MN-700 and I have two satellite
computers, a PC laptop and a MAC powerbook, which connect
via the Wi-Fi.

If I change my computer name on the desktop (which I use
to download firmware updates and change the router
settings) will this cause problems for the remote
computers?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The type of problems it would cause are related to file & Printer
sharing. If your computer name is not compatible with the OS running on
the other computers the other computers can no longer connect to your
computer by name only by IP address.

The computer name should not have anything to do with it, Alan. I believe
the information you're citing refers to the SSID (service set identifier)
name of the Local Area Network (LAN) which is limited to 20 characters as
stated in this Knowledge Base article:

The computer name is the Netbios name of the machine. AFAIK it should be 15
characters or less and should not contain underscores or "special"
characters (whatever that might mean). I am sure searching the MS KB or
Google for Netbios name will cough up some recommendations.

IIRC, similar ideas apply to workgroup names...
