how to remove NT BDC from Active Directory domain

Hello. Many years ago, we helped a client upgrade their network from NT to
Windows 2000/Active Directory.

They had two servers running Windows NT Server - one was the PDC (let's call
it SERVER1), one was the BDC (let's call it SERVER2). We did an inplace
upgrade of the BDC to Windows 2000 Server. It assumed all of the FSMO
roles.

SERVER2 continued to run Windows NT server, and keep its BDC role. This was
because there was too little disk space to complete the upgrade to Windows
Server 2000.

The local domain was/is running in "Windows 2000 Mixed Mode")

Since then, more servers have been added - SERVER3, SERVER4, SERVER5,
SERVER6, etc. Some are domain controllers, some are now. SERVER1 continues
to keep all of the FMSO roles.

We are now getting ready to migrate from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. We
have been told that we need to changed the domain mode from Mixed Mode to
Windows 2003 Native. But we think we will be unable to do this, because we
still have the SERVER2 NT server in Active Directory - showing as a Domain
Controller.

What would be the most graceful way to remove this old SERVER2 NT server
from Active Directory - since there was no option in NT to demote from a
Domain Controller to a Member Server.

Thanks in advance for the help.
