You can of course redirect a complete desktop through the
network, however it is usually just a waste of space on your
desktop.
Using 'ssh -CX remotehost' from a system running some Xserver
allows you to start apps remotely and you get the GUI seamless
integrated into your local desktop. X was designed from ground up
with network capabilities. You can login through a dozen systems
and start some X app and the GUI will be tunneled back secure
through all those machines back to your local display.
If you want more and faster control over your server, you don't
need any GUI app at all any unix system such as Linux is designed
to be completely controlled from the shell.
