Success! Partly, anyways. The clean boot allowed me to use remote desktop.
And I found that my Firewall is what is preventing me from using remote
desktop from home. Thanks much for getting mr to this point. But there are
some things here I don't understand - bear with me, I'm no network or
firewall guy, strictly a programmer with too much mainframe background:
1) I use Windows Live OneCare, and turn the firewall on/off through it. I
had previously turned the firewall off thru OneCare to see if that was the
problem, and this did not allow me to use remote desktop. I made SURE it was
off, even re-booted with it turned off. Why would this not have worked, while
disabling the firewall thru the msconfig services tab did work? Are the
LiveOnecare firewall and windows firewall two different things?
2) Why do I only have the problem only when I'm trying to use remote desktop
from home? I can successfully use it anywhere else I've tried via wireless
connections, with the firewall on, as I'm doing right now.
3) Are there some firewall-related settings I need to look at/change in
order to get my remote desktop to work from home? I know nothing about
Firewall, other than that I need it and what I've mentioned here! Again,
thanks for the help. It's a relief to at least know there's a workaround,
though i don;t want ot have to keep turning the firewall on/off when I'm at
home (which is most of the time).
