Remote desktop stopped working

Remote desktop used to work to a 2003 server, but stopped working a while
ago.
When connecting, I get the log-in screen, log in, it proceeds normally and
for a moment it seems like it works, but then immediately it logs off
automatically, giving the "logging off" and "saving your settings", and then
it is gone.

Thanks.

Do you're talking about RDP or TS?. Connect to 2003 or from 2003
to......what?

Hi Giuseppe, thanks for the response.

> Do you're talking about RDP or TS?

RDP = Remote Desktop Protocol, I'm using the Remote Desktop Connection
client
(Start->Programs->Accessories->Communications->RemoteDesktopConnection), so
my guess would be RDP.

> Connect to 2003 or from 2003 to......what?

Connect to 2003, the Remote Desktop client can be on 2003, XP Pro, XP Home,
I've tried them all.

Remote Desktop is enabled on the server (Control Panel->System->Remote), and
it used to work.
As mentioned, when logging in from the client, it proceeds normally and
seems OK for a second, but then immediately logs off automatically, giving
the "logging off" and "saving your settings" windows, and then it closes, as
if I logged off from the client program.

Sorry, another question:
You connect to server 2003 from another pc, ok, but from where, from same
subnet or from internet/vpn, other remote type connection?

Hey Chris, I can't say I have ever seen that, but I have seen stranger things!

I would check a few things out:

First, can you connect to other 2000 or 2003 servers remotely? Second, is
there a group policy defining remote access or (with XP workstations, SP2)
firewall settings? How about any local policy changes? (2003 does everything
with Group Policy, it can be applied locally though.)

I do not really have a clue what this could be, but looking at these things
may get us pointed in the right direction.

I would also scan the event viewer and look for an error code either in the
application or system event log.

You also mentioned that this used to work, did anything change with your
network, servers, or workstation? New software, update virus engine, anything?

Hi Giuseppe, thanks again. It goes through the Internet, so port 3389 I
think? Not the same sub-net and not VPN.
Actually I don't think it is a network problem, just thought this may be a
relevant group, that people on the group may be using Remote Desktop and
came upon the problem.

Hi Jason, the only thing that changed was that I applied the security
updates on the server - I always do this in any case when they become
available.
This is my computer at home, and I don't have a second one to see how it
behaves. IIS connects though.
I was going to check the event log last night, but something came up. I'll
check it tonight. Thanks for the pointers.

Hi Giuseppe and Jason,

Sounds like it may be the NVIDIA driver/helper service.
http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/...4-07/0724.html

I have it installed and will give this a shot tonight.
