Remote Desktop Not Working

I've just set up some new PCs. I've enabled Remote Desktop on them, and
added my usual users.

The Windows Firewall is disabled on them for other purposes.

When I try to remotely connect to one of the PCs, I get this message "The
connection was ended because of a network error. Please try connecting to
the remote computer again."

I did do a netstat -a and see that it is in fact listening on Port 3369.

I can ping the machines by name or IP no problem.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Thanks,
Glenn

What about your ports on your network equipment? If this is on a LAN with a
simple switch, it wouldn't be a problem but if you're coming from outside
the LAN then your hardware firewall will need to forward the port.

Also check to make sure remote desktop is enabled in your My
Computer..Properties..Remote

Basically the error you are getting means some peice of equipment is saying
"no thanks" to an RDP request.

You could download a copy of Ethereal and see what's going on on your
network which may give you a clue as to where it's choking.

I can connect to other computers on the same network without a problem.

I have made sure remote desktop is enabled...over and over...even disabled
it then re-enabled it and that didn't help.

I have Etherreal, but not quite sure how to use it to find out the answer to
this.

Is the port 3389 or 3369? Or this troubleshooting link may help,

Troubleshooting terminal server issues "Because of a network error, the session will be disconnected. Please try to reconnect" ... The Terminal server has ended the connection ...

I took 2 computers, one that has had no issues with computers connecting to it remotely, and one that has, and put them on a linksys router switch of their own.

The problem continued to happen. I couldn't connect to the new machine from the one I already had, but I could connect from the new one to the one I already had.

I can't find any firewall settings on the new machine, etc.

do a simple test, can you telnet port 3389 itself?

Do I do that by typing either of the following and command prompt: telnet
ipofmachine:3389 or nameofmachine:3389 (obviously substituting ipofmachine
or nameofmachine for actual info)?

TELNET MachineName 3389

You won't actually see a response if RDP is running. Your command
prompt will return a blank line. However, if RDP is NOT running, your
connection will fail.

I've occasionally experienced this problem. On a few occasions, I've
resolved it by disabling RDP, rebooting and then re-enabling it. (Also
make sure along the way to verify that File/Printer Sharing is enabled
in the NIC adapter properties.)

I know this isn't exactly a "scientific" solution, but it's worth a try
anyway.
