Is there anyway to log remote desktop connection to the event log or a text
file. We have to comply with certain document proceudres of who comes in and
out and when of our systems.

How are the users getting to remote desktop?

All you're normally going to see is something in the local workstation's
event logs, if you turn up auditing, and I'm not sure it will let you easily
differentiate between a local user and a remote user.

Then as mentioned, your options are pretty limited.

Consider a login script enforced by GPO including

echo logon %date% %time% %UserName% >>
\\SERVER\SHARE\netlog\log%ComputerName%.txt

This creates a file for every workstation and PC used for VPN connection,
but avoids contention issues. Of course you need the authority to ensure
there is no ambiguity between names of LAN workstations and names of VPN
users laptops or home PCs.

Obviously a similar line in the logoff script completes the info.
