Remote Desktop is flaky

I hope this is the correct newsgroup. I have tried to hire local computer
businesses in the area to help configure my network but they have not been
able to solve my problem. The business that setup my network is no longer in
business. Now I am trying to solve it myself.
With Windows XP pro (my work) and home (my house) I remote with windows
remote desktop to a Windows 2003 server R2 for business purposes (POS
application that is currently not being used daily because of this problem).
I can connect but the connection is flaky.
What I have tried: Installed Keepalives on server and remote computers.
Changed ISPs except at server location. I have had the ISP at the server
location tested several times by the ISP. The DSL does not drop the
connection as often as the remote desktop has to reconnect.
Any advice on how to proceed? I would like my business to work smoothly on
POS.

What do you mean by "flaky"?

That really tells us nothing..

When I connect using RD, many times a day the RD screen disconnects and
reconnects automatically right where I left off. It only stays disconnected
for about 20 seconds. By checking my event viewer I can see the disconnect
and reconnect time of the remote printers: How often it disconnects ranges
from twice in one minute to about three hours.
My Windows server 2003 setup has a wired linksys router behind he DSL modem.
Both have port 3389 forwarded to the server. Attached to the router is a
LAN whose computers run the desired POS application on the server without
flaw.
I have also tried disabling the screensaver on the server as well as on the
group policies with no luck of creating a more stable connection for the
remote location. I have tried to create a VPN with the router but it
disables the POS application from the LAN when I assign the IP security
policy.

Perhaps try this:

http://www.pingplotter.com/

I've found it to be very useful to find the source of network issues.
Run it over the course of a whole day, or a couple of days to gather
enough data.

By chance do you have 2 NICs on the computer you are connecting to your
server with? If so are both active? Are you actually only using one of them?

I looked in the device manager and it says I have a 3Com EtherLink XL NIC and
a Broadcom NetXtreme Gb Ethernet controller. So it looks like I only have
one. You must be suggesting that I need two.
Thank you Danny.

No I'm not suggesting 2 I have seen symptoms just like you are describing
when a computer has 2 NICs installed and enabled, and you are actually using
only 1. The computer has to "find" the connection that leads to the internet
and hence the delay. Once it finds the correct connection the next request
has to "find" the internet again. It results in connecting to a site (you
look over the page) then click on a link and the computer has to "find"
(10 - 20 second delay) the correct connection again and to the user it
appears really similar to the description you provided here.

Is it possible you have a wireless card installed and enabled that is
automatically connecting to a wireless network?

Just a shot............

Actually, for terminal services problems such as this,
microsoft.public.windows.terminal_services is the best place to post.
