Remote Desktop connection issue

I am connecting through Remote Desktop to my Server. I can connect and use
programs but the computers disconnect often theplus side is that they
reconnect automatically with the programs still open right where they left
off.
The time it takes to reconnect is about 20 seconds long but seems forever
standing in front of a customer. The time it takes to disconnect varies
between 20 seconds to 4 hours usually about every 10 minutes and the computer
does not need to be idle. One Event log I have is it disconnecting twice in
one minute. I happens many times in a day.
For the remote computer I am using windows XP Pro SP2 and RD version 7 and 8
as well as XP home. The server is Windows server 2003 R2.
I have triple checked the RD settings on server on remote machines, swaped
ethernet cables, checked screensaver settings on all machines as well as the
Group Policies, used different ISPs on the remote locations which all have no
problems with internet explorer. I have called many different computer
neworking buisinesses locally about this problem and they have suggestions
but no solution yet. I have had this problem for over two years.
Any help would REALLY be appreciated.
Derek

How are you actually connecting from client to server?

I use RD icon I put on my desktop. I then input my credentials. I connect
and stay connected with variable time interuptions.
