Remote connection to server

I have been trying to connect to my server (Win 2003 Server) remotely using
RDP. I have enabled RDP on the server. The server is connected to a 3 com
DSL gateway along with several other PC's. We have a static IP address.

I was told from other users that I would "need to forward the standard TCP
port of 3389 to the server from the Router/Firewall". I am trying to do
this with no success.

When I access the DHCP Client List on the 3com all the PC's are listed
except the server. When I go on the server and "ipconfig" I get
192.168.1.2. If I input this number (when trying to add the 3389 port) as
the Virtual Server IP Address I get an error message saying "The IP address
of DMZ Host you entered are invalid."

Any help on what the server's address on the network would be appreciated.
Am I missing a setting on the server beside enabling RDP?

Thanks

Make sure no other computer using the same port 3389. Also make sure you disable the DMZ.

No one is using 3389, DMZ is disabled.

How do I find what IP address is for the server? Why isn't it listed in the DHCP clients on tyhe router?

Thanks

In the most cases, the server is using the static. Go to the LAN>properties>TCP/IP properties or use command ipconfig /all to find the IP.

When I query the server with ipconfig /all I get the following:

Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790]
(C) Copyright 1985-2003 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\cabjo2>ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : cabjfs01
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0D-60-D1-56-C6
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2

In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties the "Obtain An IP address automatically" button is NOT checked; "Use the following IP address" and "Use the following DNS server addresses" buttons are checked with the IP address being as above.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

> Am I missing a setting on the server beside enabling RDP?

from command prompt type netstat /an and look for 3389 listening. If
so, machine is configured properly.

C:\Documents and Settings\Zach.DBAKD>netstat /an

Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State

TCP 0.0.0.0:3389 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING

>If I input this number (when trying to add the 3389 port) as

the Virtual Server IP Address I get an error message saying "The IP
address
of DMZ Host you entered are invalid

It Sounds like you are trying to enter ip address for a DMZ host. If
DMZ is disabled you would get that error. Could you possibly entered
the info in the wrong field . Mabey they are close together and was
accidentally entered in the DMZ field? Just a shot in the dark.

Static IP's do not show up on DHCP tables.

Thanks very much for trying to help. Normally I would have given up by now
and paid some IT person to come in and fix my problem, but I am trying to
learn. Thank you again for your patience!

Did the netstat /an command; 3389 is listening so everyting seems OK on the
server.

Changed some settings on the router and voila everything works the way it
should. Now onto the next challenge.

Thanks
