"an error occured trying to access the address book
provider" This is the message I get when i try to set up
remote administraton on windows 98SE
I have succedded in seting up a home network for file
sharing and ICS(internet connection sharing).
I am trying to enable remote administration of my computer
so that the following is possible:
1.It can be set up to enable others on the network to see
resource use on my computer
2. It can be possible for people on the network to view
each others desktop and programs
3. It can be possible to perform remote control or
administration of this network from the internet.
I have attempted to set up my computer for user-level
access control by following these steps outlined
in 'windows help':
"To control access by using a list of names
-open the Network dialog box.
-Click the Access Control tab, and then click User-level
access control.
-In Obtain list of users and groups from, type the name of
the computer or network domain where the list of names is
stored".
Where can I find the name of the computer or network
domain?
Is this name the same as the name given to my networked
computers during set up which can be found in the
IDENTIFICATION tab of the NETWORK dialog box?
If it is, which of the computer names do I put in
the "Obtain list of users and groups from:" dialog box?
I have tried both computer names on the network one after
the other, but I get the message "windows could not find
the specified security provider on the network. Do you
want to use the name you typed anyway?".
One of the computers name goes through but when it comes
to setting up the remote administration in the ‘password
properties’ dialog box, every time I click Add, the error
message "an error occured trying to access the address
book provider" comes up. It is supposed to come up with a
list of persons or groups who I want to give permission to
view the resource use on my computer but it does not.
Am completely stumped now and don't know how to proceed.
Please help.
Thank you
Vince
