My brother is still having trouble with the livebox on orange and I
need to diagnose where the problems are, I suspect a faulty livebox,
so I want a recommendation for a cheap, reliable wireless router with
a couple of ethernet ports that will support mac address pairing and
wep/wap password protection. He uses ssh a lot, and I know nothing
about how that works, so it needs to support it. Any suggestions, he's
200 miles from me so I'll need to mail order it direct to him.

Out Of Interest. Presumably he's indicating that he's interested, not that
he's run out of interest ;-)

Yes. I'm just guessing.

Sometimes I do wonder, but this time I'm mildly interested in the
original problems.

Adsl stays in sync but internet access lost, hard reboot (switching of
at main) works less than 50% of the time and when it fails it either
hangs whilst negotiating with the ppp server or reports it down. The
VOIP connection is quite noisy. All these problems are his reporting
to me, I left it 3 weeks ago and it seemed to be working fine. He is
well out in the sticks. When it's working it seems good.

I've got 2 liveboxes and AFAIAA none of them had had any problems.
Admittedly 1 doesn't use VoIP but the other one uses the VoIP
frequently, mainly for incoming calls, and clarity seems to be good.
Ring cadence and clear down times seem to be crap though.

So from reading this then you mention VoIP, which you did not
originally list in the list of requirements. Without VoIP, Netgear
DG834G, one here on Orange without a problem for the last few months
and many many more of mine out there on other SP's with no problems.

If you do want the VoIP back then I'd look at Draytek for a decent
replacement.

Thanks, as this is just to check the livebox that's fine.

No I'll just get him to try the other router, if that works OK he'll
have words with Orange, I actually didn't realise there was a way of
getting the VOIP working on the orange broadband without the livebox.

Yeah, I may have just gone off on a tangent there. It's something that
would be handy to work on other routers, but not something I've done
much about looking into. Maybe disgregard that bit then.
