Reference to old DNS servers

Hello-

a couple of weeks ago my boss demoted an old DC that at one time was the
PDC. It is a Win 2k server previously running DHCP, DNS, and WINS. Since the
demotion, people have been complaining that certain programs are running
slower, it is taking longer to log on to the network, etc. When I run
ipconfig /all on the computers having problems, i see the 2 old DNS server
entries. I remove the computer from the domain, run NBTSTAT -R to purge the
remote cache name table, delete the computer entry from AD, assign a static
ip, rejoin the domain, (not always successfully on the first try) run the
Network ID, and go back to dynamic ip. This works for a while, then the DNS
entries return.

Does anyone have a clue? Because I DEFINITELY DON'T!

Re-create DHCP and DNS to assign IP and DNS to all computers.

Thanks for the response- Can you point me in the direction of some good
instructions on how to do that? I'm not confident enough to do this on the
company domain without instructions..

I would actually update the DNS entries in the DHCP Server. To do this, open
DHCP and then browse to the scope you're wanting to check. Click on Scope
Options and you will see 006 DNS Servers. Enter the correct servers here.
Also check the DNS Domain Name and make sure this is correct

would you recommend this be done after business hours?

No. It will be fine. Just adjust the DHCP Scopes as he described. When the
"lease" runs out and they "renew", they will get the new correct DNS. You
could also do a manual "release/renew" if you wanted,..or just reboot the
machines.

Don't forget that not all your machines are using DHCP,..some have
statically assigned TCP/IP Configs. You will have to correct those manually
on each machine.

Hey Phillip- Thanks for the response. The DHCP scopes are fine as is the
DNS domain name. Can you tell me in detail what I need to do to re-create
DHCP and DNS to assign IP and DNS to all computers? I assume that means
delete the old entries then re-create. Sorry, but I'm new at this and don't
have enough time to research right now.
Thanks,
Jim

Gareth already gave you that. Scope options,..Option #006.
You don't delete anything, you adjust what is there.

I previously mentioned that the scope options are all pointing to the correct
servers.
What about cached DNS entries? Would there be something there causing a
problem? Can you tell me what to look for? Keep in mind that the servers
that keep re-appearing as DNS servers are still on the network but are no
longer running DNS, DHCP and WINS.
Thanks

I don't know.

Make sure they aren't. Completely uninstall DNS, DHCP and WINS from those
machines,...don't just disable them.
