redirecting clients to new server after data move

I am in the process of migrating data from an old server to a new one. This
is causing the usual grief with user shortcuts, as well as one of our
applications that users have been putting UNC paths to files in as links
(and of course the server name is changing as I move the data, thereby
killing the links).

Is there any way to have a client automatically redirected by the old server
to the new server for specific shares, while still keeping both servers up
and on the network?

i.e. User attempts to access \\oldserver\share and is redirected to
\\newserver\share

Once again, I need to keep both servers on the network for now, so I don't
see a way to fool the clients with a DNS change.

There's nothing in DFS that could accomplish this, is there?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Phil

Old Server is Windows 2000 SP4
New Server is Windows Server 2003 SP1

DFS is a solution if the old server remains up forever.

The permanent solution is to give the new server the same name as the old
one,...or change all the user's "shortcuts".
