Hi,
I have been using tkpppoe which has a tiny GUI with three buttons:
start/stop/exit to connect to the internet. I have a yahoosbc dsl.
Recently I cloned my linux partition to a larger disk. I could have
done a clean installation of RH9 and I would not have this problem
but I decided to clone my existing one (was RH7, far from up2date,
but I have updated some packages that I frequently use). Because now
I have more disk space, I started installing more rpm packages. The
first one I tried to install is the redhat-config-network package.
I had also to install a bunch of other packages before I was able
to finally get it installed.
I created a xDSL connection and it was as easy as with tkpppoe. However,
when I tried to activate it, I observed the following:
(1) ifconfig output
# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:63:C4:13:85
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:2162 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:2357 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:5 Base address:0xd400
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:1791 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1791 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:68.121.217.207 P-t-P:10.1.1.1 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
RX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
(2) /etc/resolv was empty, therefore no way to connect to the internet.
(3) The redhat-config-network GUI showed the ppp0 device to be inactive,
so I had no way to deactivate it but using kill -9 those dsl/ppp processes.
After I killed those processes, I can still use the old tkpppoe GUI to
do the connection.
I am wondering what went wrong? A clean installation of RH9 did not have
this problem at all.
Thanks,
Minghui
