I signed up with Andrews and Arnold on a Thursday afternoon; collected the
modem from the post office on the Saturday morning; that evening I plugged
it in and it all worked.

I don't think I was particularly fortunate. I think it is not unusual
for connection to be a few days before the date that BT hand out...

Same here roughly, my line was live after 3 days. But cause of a weekend[BT
then didn't work on ADSL self installs on weekends] it took BT 3 more days
to get around to finishing the connection. That was when they where busy
with the pre signups in April a year ago.

Thats just the over heads you don't see. It's just rated at 256/512 as
that's what you get.

I think the fastest we have seen is something like 16 hours, but the
next day (i.e. around 24 hours) is quite normal for any line that is
GREEN on the line test.

I could not agree more. That is a nonsense.

Basically they have no hurry on handling the cease side - they will
often have the line active for a day or so after the date, and then will
take time to unjumper it and update records. Only then will they do the
provide.

We have pointed out the stupidity to them several times.

I wonder if a complaint to OFTEL and muttering 'restrictive practice'
might help?
