These are the top rated ISPs at broadband Help which should I go for?

1 Spinier.net
2 BISCIT
3 freedom2surf
4 Nildram
5 Timewarp Internet
6 Eclipse

PlusNet gets mentioned a lot here but they've got a £70 setup fee, more
expensive than the others and Freedom2Surf has none. TIA

That doesn't exactly strike you as an up to date site - the last news
item being dated over a month ago. The forums seem incredibly quiet.

Further spinier.net (never heard of them) have such a high rating
because there's 14 reviews, all of which say 'excellent'. The second
rated ISP has 156 'excellent' reviews (much more statistically
significant), but a few in the other categories. It's a very crude
ratings system anyway - with only three options.

I'd go more by what people are saying on ADSLguide - which is a very
busy site.

I'd recommend Zen personally - I'm with them, I'm happy, I get nothing
for recommending them (they don't do referral bonuses) and they usually
rate highly in the ADSLguide speed tests, as well as having a good
reputation on the ADSLguide forums.

To an extent, the more you pay for setup, the shorter the contract. Zen
charge what they are charged by BT Wholesale for enabling the line
(58.75), but only tie you in for a month.

Plusnet are a bit of an exception, as they charge an activation fee and
tie you in for 12 months.

What sort of service are you after - cheap and basic, or more expensive
and fully featured? What speed are you looking for, and do you want a
capped or uncapped service?

There are a tremendous number of "please recommend an ISP" posts - the
truth is that different ISPs suit different users, which is why there
are so many!

Spinier are friendly but very small think they only have about 30,000 users
total (and that includes in France!) i have considered then as their
offices are not too far from me.
Biscit can be expensive if you want extras like newsgroups.
freedom2surf have many happy customers, resonable prices, but poor
selection of newsgroups (no binarys)
nildram, most seem happy with.
timewarp little known!
eclipse another popular isp, many users.
out of the bunch id go for either nildram, eclipse or freedom2surf, with
consideration gave to spinier.
HTH (even if its a little bit)

Never heard of 1, no knowledge re users of 2, 4, or 5. Clients of mine
have/are using Freedom 2 Surf and Eclipse (one is on the Flex package),
and have no bad comments about them. What's top of your requirements ?
Speed can be seen on the ADSLguide for both Eclipse and Nildram, while I
guess Freedom to Surf has the advantage on setup. Have fun !! Peter.

PlusNet <http://tinyurl.com/24ymz> - I recommend them and save some cash.

I know someone who has just tried to sign up with freedom2surf and has
had a torrid time of it taken weeks to sort it out.

Plusnet are Highly rated, Zen are very highly rated I have had no
problems at all with Pipex in the 3.5 years I have been with them.

I hear BT are the pits and tiscali are OK but not outstanding

ADSLguide seem to have the most inormative and balanced assesment of the
current ISP's

I've used Nildram for over a year now with no problems, never had to
ring their support.

I think they are a little overpriced now but things seem to be
changing quickly ATM.

I may give Zen a try in the new year.

Hi,

What exact problems are they having with signing up? I might be able to help
them, or if not put them in touch with someone within freedom2surf that can.

This is INCORRECT.
PlusNet Activation fee is industry std. £57.50 (50+Vat, which goes to BT) on
Annual contract.
On Monthly contract the fee is £70, because PlusNet is taking a risk that
their admin time would be wasted on a short term customer.

Which ever ISP you choose you will end up paying the std. activation fee
either up front, or later trough higher monthly fee (PlusNet have that
option too).
In order to compare ISP prices properly you need to calculate the total cost
for first 12 month.
Regards,
Martin

Maybe I'm an old fart, but I'd steer well away from *any* ISP that
offered a free MP3 player as an inducement...
