Hi,

Can anyone recommend one of the above?

ADSL connection at home, running at 8Mbps.

ISP says their service will work with any modem router.

Need wireless. Have two laptops and a wireless printer.

Port forwarding needed - don't want blocked ports etc.

Bewildered by the choice - need some advice on what would suit best.

Grateful for any advice.

Thanks,

AS.

Draytek. Not cheap but fantastically reliable.

Netgear DG834G. Cheap and rock solid. Also supports ADSL2+ with latest
firmware.

Well I'll be the first possible detractor then.

It will all depend on what usage is going to be made of the link. If
the OP is going to run a small server, p2p or any other service which
could make people queue to access his system then Netgear, even with
the latest firmware, won't be able to cope. If this is the scenario
then Draytek (or even Cisco) are as solid as a rock when put under
load (not as expensive as you may imagine if you shop around, Ebay can
be your friend)

If on the other hand it's going to be used for email, usenet & general
browsing with the odd download for upgrades etc then yes it may be
stable enough..

Total confidence=normally wrong! My Netgear copes just fine with p2p thank you!
Currently at 440 hours (since I last rebooted it for rewiring) with plenty of
p2p included in a general mix.

Shame mine doesn't get past the 48hr mark without a reboot, I even had
the unit replaced & the latest firmware loaded & it still can't get
past the 48hr mark. The reboot only takes around 90 seconds &
sometimes not detected by the software that I'm using, but sometimes
it does cause problems..

It's down to usage as I said, I often have over 1000 users queueing up
on me link, which the Netgear just can't cope with (present moment got
1006 queueing)

This is what I don't get. I also have a DG834G and I have since installed
numerous times the same router (lately the version 2 of the router) and none
of them have the P2P problem that you mention. Furthermore, none of them
have the latest firmware upgrade either, not even mine.

I have little experience in this field so have taken the advice of a
helpful assistant in my local Maplin store. I bought an Inexq wireless
router and after one or two minor setup problems I have a rock steady
system with superb wireless cover. I live in an old large stone house
with very thick walls. Usually, wireless is difficult as proven with a
number of cordless telephone system trials. This router is great as the
wireless signal is strong over the whole house and surrounding
outbuildings. I have it passworded just in case but, it is unlikely to
attract eavesdroppers as I have no immediate neighbours. It ids great! I
have the main house PC connected via a LAN switch on hardwire with my
daughter's laptops connecting anywhere in the house. It was so easy to
set up once I discovered that the default password had been changed. I
would be happy to recommend this piece of gear to anyone. I paid £59-99
for it and in my opinion, it was money well spent.

You'll probably be surprised then to hear that I actually use P2P, run a
quite active webserver, forum, FTP server, webcam, and share internet
between 3 computers, all using my Netgear DG834G at the heart of it all. So
you are completely wrong that it can't handle stress.

Its rock solid too......
