Do not touch TalkTalk / carphonewarehouse with a barge pole.

Many joined them this year with the promise of a cheap uncapped
service. And many thought this was too good to be true and contacted
their sales staff who confirmed it was true. Plus as this is really
carphonewarehouse it must be ok.

And it was true but in the past few weeks they have blocked ports
preventing online gaming, p2p etc. This all day every day : all you can
do is browse!

Actually they have not really blocked ports they appear open and
connections are made but speeds are well 0 kbps. Blocking under another
name.

The talktalk/carphonewarehouse school of customer care:

You would think they would only target individuals and not make
everyone suffer - unless they don't have the ability. Whatever it's a
blanket ban and all the customers suffer. You want to read forums
elsewhere to see the anger!

They started by blocking only from 4pm till around 1am. And I think
most TalkTalk customers were ok with this. So why change it and upset
all their customers?

TalkTalk seem not to want to talk to the customer - just quote T&Cs :
if a customer is abusing etc then they have the right to do something.
But as it's a blanket ban this is clearly not the case.

As this is carphonewarehouse I am really dissapointed as I thought they
were a decent company.

My contract ends soon, so where to go next? A respectable ISP? A true
uncapped service, reasonable price?

Dave,

you are happy with them cos you are not a p2p user i don't think.

They are kinda ok , alright a few technical issues from time to tim
but no big deal and for the price you cannot complaint.

But i am one ANGRY customer who is now stuck with them and have
months left in my contract cannot go anywhere and can only use the ne
for browing and emailing... WTF..!!!!

What kind of future to internet they call this eh??

In fact, can someone out there shed me some light?? It seems like
have fallen into a dark ditch with no hope...

I either need to know how to get round their blockages... Or need t
know how to walk out (without paying the 6 months remaining)..

surely they cannot just do this can they?? That is affecting a lot o
the lives of the users

So what ports do they block ? 7070 ? 554 ? 119 ? 22 ? If those ports are
OK you could easily make use of streaming audio and with many webcams on port
80 (eg <http://www.bu.edu/alumni/cam/> ) <http://www.plus.net/btbroadband/>
will let you use their news service free for 3 months, and the Plus.Net web
cams are also available (to give Boston a rest) so you could make use of a
number of services and perhaps get yourself booted for excessive traffic!

There are some services to provide "anonymous" access using SSH so you could
have an encrypted "tunnel" via port 22 and there's be no way for TalkTalk
to know what you were doing (but those services aren't free). Peter M.

Dave, are you saying that you do not have a problem playing games, p2p
etc?

I should say that I saw a posting like mine and I did not have a
problem at that time but then I was hit a few weeks back.

I also saw the suggestion that this blanket blocking ban was possibly
on an exchange basis i.e. you will soon be covered by it and find all
you can do with TalkTalk is browse the net.

To see what I mean search in this group on TalkTalk and also have a
look at the adslGuide.org.uk TalkTalk message board and see the number
of irate customers.

I see ofcom are to investigate Bulldog, I hope that they also look at
investigating TalkTalk.

I joined TalkTalk broadband on the 23rd Dec 2004, by March 2005 I had left -
without penalty. TalkTalk phone service is fine their broadband is pure crap.
They don't block ports but they shape traffic, anything that isn't
web-browsing will crawl or stop. They let me go after constant complaining, I
would constantly get dropped connections with TalkTalk, yet previously and
afterwards with Pipex, not a single dropped connection.

TalkTalk phone service yes, TalkTalk broadband - No way - not if you want
fast, reliable, hassle free broadband.

I'm sure it was just coincidence but after my last post
here TalkTalk broadband was back to 'normal'. Yes,
I could do all the broadbandy things that their website
promised, online games, fast downloads.

So was it all a mistake? Had TalkTalk corrected the
problem? Had carphonewarehouse realised the damage
being done to their reputation and stepped in?

But no it was not to be - it's all stopped : I'm back
to the equivilant of dial up speeds or else getting zero!
Curses!

I hope folk who read this (and who posted) do not mind
but I thought I'd post a mix of recent posting snippets
taken from elsewhere - for the benefit of those looking
for an ISP. It's important to publicise these things yes?

<SNIPPETS>
My new ISP, plusnet is a GODSEND, compared to these lying gits.

Talktalk say NOTHING about shaping, capping etc yet their speeds
are below 56k levels a lot of the time, thats about 5k.
They also send out letters after claiming that they are
unlimited about downloading
Ping times awful. LIARS.

---

talktalk dont even have a forum of their own do they?
Thats just so devious as I'm sure it would be FULL of
complaints.

---

They have lied to about maintance work, ports are not blocked,
internet speed is not capped, refused my to speak to the manager, etc.
So I have decided to involve 3rd party, which is www.otelo.org.uk.

---

You obviously monitor this forum, ALL the top ISPs do.

....there is someone with a problem on these forums then..
all the good ISPs...ANSWER it.

How about being brave and actually REPLYING to some of these problems??

---

'TalkTalk describe their service as "unlimited".
I think that's jolly misleading if they don't mind
me saying so and I'd like to challenge their MD to
step outside for a spot of fisticuffs. What an absolute
shower they are, simply dreadful chaps. Bounders and
cads the lot of them...... '
