Recomendation for small IP based KVM

Hi,

I want to see if I can get an IP based KVM for doing work on machines
from another keyboard/monitor/mouse on the network. I.E, have the PC
downstairs, connected to KVM, and then go upstairs to do the work on
the system. We have one at work, but is an expensive Dell rebadged
job with a lot of KVM ports on. I need 4 ports as a minimum, but
would considder less if the cost was right.

Any suggestions?
Andrew.

Any reason why you can't have Remote Desktop or VNC running on those machines
instead?

TightVNC or one of its siblings will do it for free (as long as the
machines are already networked).

Remote desktop perhaps, but I don't want to mess about with other apps
on other people's hardware. Also, one of the machines I want to
manage is running on Linux with no X11 based config on it.

Even easier - just set up SSH

Then surely you can SSH or Telnet in?

Done already, but it would be nice to have it on the KVM so I can
perform reboots etc without having to move and attach keyboard to it
(the BIOS haults when a keyboard is not present). This is one reason
I said I could go lower than 4 switches.

Setting the BIOS to "Halt on no errors" should avoid the keyboard
problem.

No such option - sorry.

I take it then there are no such products really available?

Thanks,
Andrew.

Take the circuit board from a knackered keyboard and leave it plugged
into the Linux box to fool it?

Not IP based - you could certainly use an ordinary KVM switch with KVM
extenders that use Cat5, but that would need extra cabling and they seem
to start at around 300 quid.
