Receiving broadband signal within same house

We have a desktop PC on 1st floor connected by cat5 cable to an
ADSLMax service, via a Netgear D834G router.

Recently we have also inherited another desktop PC having a Broadcom
4318 wireless PCI card, which is now set up on the ground floor.

However, the signal at that PC is poor (showing 1 bar out of 5), and
although it is OK for the SO's use (email and a bit of web browsing),
any heavy downloading (e.g. software updates) tend to incure several
transmission errors.

So, the questions I have are w.r.t. the aerials:

(1) Regarding the orientation of the router and wireless card
aerials, is there any particular arrangement (vertical, horizontal,
both aligned in same direction, etc.) that would maximise the received
signal?

(2) Is there a simple way of extending one or other (or both) of the
aerials to improve the received signal?

A very interesting solution; I enjoyed reading that!

That may well be the answer for us.

I see that Amazon have a twin pack of the Solwise Homeplugs, which
have cery good reviews, also Argos have a twin pack of the Belkin
Powerline 85Mbps kit, at about the same price as the Solwise (£50).

Anyone know if they have am option to prevent anyone else on the same
power circuit from plugging their own adaptor in, and does the
option depend on the use of Windows to set up?

Why not just run another CAT5 cable down to the other computer, and forget
the wireless connection? [As an added bonus, you can then disable wireless
on the router, and avoid all the usual wireless security problems].

Ok it you do not mind CAT 5 running all over the house Roger
everywhere I look here I see it , I shall be moving shortly and I am
very determined not to have much of it in the new house.

The route would be tortuous. Would rather use Homeplugs!

Then before you decorate, embed it in the walls.

I wonder if anyone has developed wireless mains cable? Could be
applications for that. See that cooker over there - I want it here....

Sooner not have it at all I do not like the sight of any cable not
just CAT5 in or outside the house there is no TV aerial at the house
at the moment and there won't be one .
BT telephone comes underground I think couldn't see any poles at the
back or front of the houses in the street when I was there yesterday
and there are two BT lines in the premises with both sockets installed
directly below the windows with no cable showing ( looks like another
cable hater has lived there )))))))) ) .
However looks like someone had cable run upstairs the cable was
hanging of the wall outside I noticed that will be removed very
quickly I can tell you, nearly got some cutters out of the car
yesterday but thought let Virgin do it when they come to reinstall us
over there .
