Assuming that you are using XP rather than Vista, unless you have a
particular need for IPv6, remove it as follows:

Go to Control Panel > Internet Connections
(http://www.ezlan.net/example/nets.jpg) right click on your wireless
connection and select "Properties"

On the Wireless Connection Properties page
(http://www.ezlan.net/example/tcp.jpg) UNinstall everything but the four
items shown in the screenshot (i.e., Client for Microsoft Networks, File
and Printer Sharing, Q0S Packet Scheduler, and Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP)). OK your way out.

I misspoke (mis-typed). Instead of looking at your wireless connection,
look at your "Local Area Connection #4" and uninstall all items other
than Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing, Q0S Packet
Scheduler, and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Now select "Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties." On the next screen, click
"Advanced." On the next screen, click the "WINS" tab. On the "WINS"
tab screen, click the radio button to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" and
OK your way out.

If this is the wrong NG please let me know. Its a network problem whether
wireless or wired

I have or had a two PC wireless network. The main PC connected to the
internet and a laptop in another room.

This past week I had to repair my Win XP home edition on the main desktop
PC, and had to painfully run all the Windows updates from SP1 up to SP2 and
then the updates from SP2 todate. Everything as far as I know has been
updated.

Today I tried turning on the Windows firewall and it would not work, as I
got a message that ICS is not started and windows could not start it.
Thinking that it would work if the network was reestablished I ran the
network wizard and at the very end it says, an error occurred and the
network could not be set up. Click finish. It does not say what the error is
or what the problem is.

I am now pretty stuck as to what else may have gone wrong or what else I
need to do.

Any help would be appreciated as I am not a network guru

Thanks

Bill

I have been on google all day looking for solutions but nothing seems to be
working yet. The PC is running fine from what I can tell except for the
network firewall problem. I could turn back on my free firewall but I would
like to get the XP one working as there is an obvious problem somewhere.

Lem,

I do not see a wireless connection in my network connections ...

I have :

Broadband (not connected as the connection is through my router)
Dial Up
Incoming connections...no clients connected
LAN 4 High speed internet ..connected

Still on google and more tips I think the problem is a broken WMI service
and I am trying to see how to repair or fix this. Seems everything relies on
this service and so far I cannot figure out how to get it started

Also I am on XP with SP2

Thanks
Bill

Lem
The above did not help.

I got my WMI working from a tip on the internet, which also got my firewall
working...but I still cannot get the network work groups connected through
the network wizard.

Let me ask another questions...although this PC had the problems the laptop
was still able to connect to the internet via the wireless router...of
course now the laptop cannot connect to this PC which is the problem..Should
I redo the wireless set up via the wireless wizard or is that basically the
same as the network wizard? I really dont want to mess up the
laptop/internet as my daughter relies on that for her studies. Not sure if I
explained this correctly

Thanks
Bill

Well after more poking around I got the network reestablished without using
the wizard. I opened My Network Places and saw a heading to 'Add a network
place' . I started this and it opened with MSN web site and an 'other
location' option. I used the browse feature and navigated to the folder that
showed the laptop and added it. It reconnected the laptop and all is well.
Did a printer test, file viewing etc. and everything works

I would like to thank Lem and the others who responded to my call. It is
good to know such interest and support is available.

Many thanks again.

Bill
