Has anyone gotten a card with the Realtek 8169 chipset to run in gigabit
mode? i've tried 2 different cards - a LinkSys and an Airlink without
success.

ethtool eth0 shows 100Mbit / full duplex. If I use the command;

ethtool -S eth0 speed 1000 i lose the link and connectivity.

Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

TIA,

Bill

I got a couple of D-LINK DGE-528T Cards with the r8169 chip that work
perfectly with kernel 2.6.14.
Had no pain of configuring, it just worked. Do you have a GByte-Switch?

Greets
Chris

Thanks for the input Chris. Yes, they are going into a Linksys 8 port
gigabit switch. I'm running a 2.6.8 kernel on all 3 boxes and it just
doesn't want to work on one. I have another Linksys card which I believe
is using the sk chipset. I'll give that another try. It's working in a
different system so we'll see what happens.

I swapped the cards around (8169 chipsaet into a box that had an sk
chipset card) and the same thing. turns out it's the *friggin patch
cable*. Yes, I did try a few different patch cables - cat 5e. No dice.
If I move the cable from a box that worked at gigabit speed (acc. to
ethtool) the other box can connect at gigabit but the previously working
box cannot (throttling it down to 100/FD let's it work fine) cannot
connect at gigabit.
