This is REALLY ODD - Can only get a connection to broadband when on the phone

This is really odd - I set up a friends broadband and could not get a
connection to broadband unless he was using the phone to make a voice
call. We ended up dialling the talking clock just to get a connection.
He's with freedom2surf with a w2k system working through a netgear
router/modem using LAN, he also has a laptop with XP Pro and a netgear
wireless card. Both machines do the same thing. The connection light
on the front of the router flashes orange for about a minute then goes
green, as if a connection has been made, but only for 2 seconds. But
if he makes a call to anyone (eg talking clock, help line, mum etc...)
it stays connected.
He has contacted freedom2surf and BT both say the line is fine, and
cannot work out what the problem is.
This is driving me mad because I said I would set it all up for him
and I can't. PLEASE HELP!!

Talk us through the phone set-up Simon,

How many phones are there and how are they filtered

Are there any other devices (faxes Sky boxes etc.) and are they through a
filter?

What happened if you unplug all the phones and filters and just have the
router connected to the line?

If the master socket had a removable lower half, carefully remove the
faceplate (check all the phones go dead), and plug the router into the
socket inside.

Heard of that happening when the microfilters were duff. Also worth
unplugging all phones etc and adding them back one by one.

the symptoms of a high resistance line fault, I believe. Damaged or
corroded cable, near to disconnection. If you are confident your
filtering etc is up to scratch insist the ISP dend BT to fix it.

Phil,

Would this fault show up on a Woosh test?

I spoke to a customer with just this problem on Friday. He had no
other telephony devices ,no extension sockets and had tried several
different filters.

Woosh tests ,both with and without the phone connected, were
consistently giving "Non-BT Fault".

Someone mentioned a similar problem about 10-12 months ago - might be
worth a quick visit to google to see how they resolved theirs.

my (limited) understanding of the Woosh test is that it asks the modem
what signals etc its getting, so if that is done iwth it online and
working (eg by having a phone off the hook) it wouldn't show up as a
fault. If the modem was off-line due to not being able to sync it must
show a fault, perhaps "CPE not connected" or the like.

Isn't Woosh a suite of tests, so it may depend which test you run. Can
it only be run with the customer equipment on line ?

if the modem won't sync in the master socket with all phones
disconnected then a BT engineer visit is needed.

The extension wiring itself can cause synch problems. Try connecting the
modem/router to the master socket, then reconnect the extensions through a
microfilter. In my case this cured the problem - the existence of the
extension wiring, unfiltered, caused the problem even with nothing plugged
into the extension sockets.

I remember,
the guy who had a PBAX connected across his line and didn't know.

Sometimes people have Redcare equipment on their line and don't realise.
