I'm almost embarrassed to ask... but anyway.

If I have two wireless (802.11b) laptops, are they able to see each
other and share documents without any other equipment, or is a kind of
hub needed to relay the wireless information.

Yes they can - it is called "ad hoc" mode.

Please read your cards documentation on how to set it up.
