I have a desktop computer connected to a laptop computer thru a wireless
network (both using XP Pro). The desktop has an external hard drive
connected by USB. From the laptop I can see and change files on the desktop
internal hard drives (two of them exist), but I have a problem with the
external hard drive. Under the "My Network Places" on the laptop I can see
the external hard drive but when I click on the drive I get an error message
"\\Desktop|external is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out
if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to
process this command."

The strange part is that last week I was able to see and change the files on
the external hard drive from the laptop. I started to have the problem once
I was running my backup program on my laptop (backing up to the networked
external drive) and mistakenly rebooted my desktop machine. Once the desktop
completed the reboot, I was then not able to see the files on the external
hard drive. I have double checked and I have the correct boxes checked for
sharing and allowing network users to change files.

I am able to see/change the internal drives (2) on the desktop and can
see/change the thumb drive on the desktop, but the external drive I still get
the same message drive not accessible and not enough server space when trying
to do it from the laptop.

What else Is there I should be trying? Did something happen to the registry
on the desktop which needs to be changed? Is there something I should check
on
my laptop?

I am desparate to figure this out and would appreciate any assistance.

I would appreciate your help.

Since this is external drive, you may need to take owner over first. This link may help.

Not Able to READ or Write to ...The desktop has an external hard drive connected by USB. From the laptop I can see and change ... You may need totake ove the ownership. This lnk may help, ...

I have checked all of the properties of sharing and ownership. I have given
everyone "full Control". As far as ownership, the only choices for ownership
are administrator of the desktop and the the logon of the sole user for that
machine. I currently have administrator as the owner but have previously
tried the logon user.

I have previously checked out the web references you provided without success.

I would appreciate more suggestions. Again, I ask about the registry since
I have tried everything else.

This post mentioned that modifying registry fixed similar issue. You may try it and please post back with the result.

Access Is Denied when Vista Accesses Network Share
I was able to fix this issue by editing the registry by replacing the ip address of the server for the server name.

I looked at the registry tweaks but they do not apply for me since those
items work fine for me now.

I wanted to give you some more information which might result in an idea for
resolving my problem.

I took my hard drive to my office and connected it to an office computer on
our network (which is the same network name that I use at home). I was able
to have access to the external hard drive from my same laptop which I tried
using from home. Essentially everything worked the way I thought it should.

I then played with the registry on the desktop machine by eliminating any
shares which referenced the external hard drive. Then I reestablished a
share on the external hard drive and I am still having the exact same problem
as before. In doing some additional exploration, I found something that
looks strange and do not know if it is associated with the problem. When I
look at “My Network Places” on the desktop it shows the shares that I create
for my hard drives under “Local Network” and “This Computer” but the shares
that I create for the external hard drive show under “The Internet” and
Desktop Machine (Desktop)”. If I open the external hard drive share from the
desktop and the go back to the same windows explorer screen that share now
shows under “Local Network” and “This Computer”.
