what is best connect modem via usb or Ethernet cable ?
my new modem has both connections , so can I send one to another pc with the
appropriate network card and the other usb connection to the main pc.?will
this work at the same speed for both pc s?
thanks new to this broadband stuff

its a speedtouch 530
its says its for internet sharing
home networking
hardware spec
lan interface usb 1.1 plus ethernet 10/100 base t
wan interface adsl over pots (multistandard)

Hi,

If your going to be using 2 or more PC's over the connection you would be
best to use an arrangement similar to below. Otherwise you are relying on
one PC to be on to support the other (I assume you were thinking of using MS
internet connection sharing). If you use a router then it will maintain the
connection for you making it always available when you use either pc without
having to check the other is powered on. While it will require a little
setup on each machine to get working it will be worth it in the long run.
You can even get new wireless routers between £50 - £60 which eliminate
untidy cabling between rooms but require slightly more setup to ensure
secure and wireless network interfaces are more expensive for each pc (just
under £30 for a USB wireless adapter). Bandwith isn't really an issue as the
slowest point in the setup will be the broadband connection anyway.


|--cat5 cable---network card in PC1
Tel/Adsl line ---- router ---cat5cable ----hub or switch---

|--cat5 cable---network card in PC2
