It's possible that you're on the same channel as a neighbouring access
point. Your PC can hear both your AP and the neighbouring AP, but in the
living room you can just hear your AP. Another explanation is the
wireless chipset on the desktop machine isn't as compatible with the
chipset on the router as the laptop is.
