The short answer is that it depends on how the two computers are
connected to the modem, like someone else mentioned. If they are
connected to the modem via a switch, hub, or direct connections (for
example, one via Ethernet and the other via USB), you won't be able to
(easily) do what you want to do. However, if the computers are
connected to a router, (and the router in turn is connected to the
modem), then it's fairly easy and you've already gotten some good
tips.
