The wireless is usually [fcn] + [f8 or 9 area] look for the blue
satellite dish picture on the key. The clue it is on will be is should at
least 'see' some wireless networks (unless you live in the sticks). It
does not warn you wireless is off.

Also try installing Netstumbler. That will help rule out a hardware or
WiFi coverage problem, including the one where you have your WiFi on the
same channel as a neighbour and they are mutually interfering with each
other, preventing some devices, especially the more sensitive,
completing a clean log-on.

I don't live in the sticks, and usually see half a dozen wireless
networks here, but a couple of days ago mine was the only one showing -
either everyone has disabled SSID broadcast or they're all away for the
holiday and have switched their routers off.

You're lucky as Ubuntu doesn't really do wireless!
I tried it with a number of laptops and also network cards and very few
are supported. At least I know the Advent PCs do.
Ubuntu is OK but there are not enough drivers and never have been.

Ubuntu does wireless almost out of the box. I've never had any trouble
with it. *some* hardware can be a bit of a challange, like 'Realtek' on
Vista for example ;-)
