Hi, Gthang!
Even though it is much maligned on this newsgroup, and always for wrong
reasons by people who obviously have used it incorrectly, I would
recommend Magic Mail Monitor (
http://home.fiam.net/mikejenn/MMM3.html).
It's free, simple and powerful enough. It comes with a ready-made Swen
virus plug-in filter (
http://nakawe.sf.net/MMM3). Magic Mail Monitor
has very convenient friends and black lists where you can use wild card
jokers such as "*" or "?". If you put all known legitimate incoming
email addresses or domain names in the friends list and any
illegitimate in the blacklist over a period, you will have designed a
very powerful global filter.
Magic Mail Monitor works wonders against SPAM if you can think through
proper filtering rules. Currently, Magic Mail Monitor catches ALL virus
infected messages and ALL SPAM on my system.
A word of advice: before you use the Magic Mail Monitor "Delete from
server" option, define a set of rules and see how they apply to your
mail. Use the "Delete from server" option only when you feel confident
that your rules won't be applied to legitimate mail.
I have personally also tried SpamPal. As far as I am concerned, it has
major snags:
a) it takes ages to filter a few messages that Magic Mail Monitor can
process in a giffy.
b) it has no header or message preview.
c) it cannot delete from server directly.
d) managing message rules and filtering seemed much too awkward and
complex. In any case it would involve spending too much time over the
few SPAM that I am actually receiving daily.
I have come back to Magic Mail Monitor with great relief!
