The following error occurs when attempting to run IPCONFIG:
> Windows IP Configuration
> An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning.
> Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.
> Additional information: Unknown media status code.
The problem is caused by a driver for an Intel wired network adapter.
The issue is known to be in versions 8 and up of drivers for some Intel
wired network adapters drivers; e.g., Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile wired
network adapter in the ThinkPad T41, including the latest driver
8.10.1.0 (11/07/2007).
The problem doesn't exist in driver versions 7 and below. The
recommended work-around is to stick with driver 7.2.17.101 (10/26/2004).
My working hypothesis is that this problem was introduced by Intel in
Version 8 of its drivers, probably as a well-intended improvement that
fell prey to the Law of Unintended Consequences. Despite attempts to
report the problem to Intel over the past year, it remains unfixed.
