Hi,

Thanks for your posts. Unfortunately the problem is still unsolved.
Restarting kppp did nothing good, I even logged out and in just to see that
it made no difference. I have to restart linux to get the modem work again
(until better advice). This happens, at least this is what I think after
longer deactivated times. If I have to reconnect soon after I disconnected
it seems to work fine (I do not frequently exercise this, though, as it
does not make too much sense).

Thanks,

Tamas

I have a similar problem with wvdial. My problem is related to
permissions on the modem device. For some reason they change after I use
my modem device. I use mine as a user so I've done the following to
counter the dialing programs changes to my devices after I disconnect.
Probably not the best or most secure way to do it, but it works for me.

chgrp user1 /dev/ttySHSF0
chgrp user1 /dev/modem
chmod g+rw /dev/ttySHSF0
chmod g+rw /dev/modem

where /dev/modem links to /dev/ttySHSF0
and /dev/ttySHSF0 is the actual modem device.

I generally run this prior to running my dialing method. Along with
setting up iptables ( netfilter.org ). Eventually I'll get around to
setting it up to be part of dial on demand and such, but I'm still
learning and have other more pressing interests at the moment.
