That doesn't work. Microsoft knowledge base has a couple of pages for
this problem but their fixes don't work either. One involves a really
long series of file deletes and re-installs (number 181599) and
the other involves going into the registry (256986 - this one
is for the specific problem of winipcfg giving the "Fatal Error - Cannot
read IP configuration" message that I get). I went into the registry
and deleted the subkeys they suggested, for example
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\servic es\vxd\afvxd
and several others, and when you reboot they come back. The strange
thing is, one of the subkeys you are supposed to delete was never
there in the first place and that is
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\servic es\vxd\dhcp
and it seems to me that dhcp would be pretty important for an ethernet
card being connected to a router. The first computer on the router
has no problem, and has all of those subkeys including the dhcp
one in its registry. So I exported that dhcp subkey from the first
computer into mine, and it stays there if I reboot, but if I remove
it and reboot, it doesn't come back.
After that I followed the long series of deletes and reinstalls
suggested in 181599 but that did nothing either. Is it ok to
reinstall using sfc rather than the original disks?
Very frustrating - 18 hrs on this so far!
