My VMware (re)experience is only a couple of weeks old, so I this
explanation could be utterly wrong. I would like to get it explained
myself.
During installation of VMware, and also later, you can set up one
or many virtual networks, those VMnet0, VMnet1, .... They could be
on the one hand bridged, NAT, etc. On the other hand they may be
completely isolated from the real network in the host or have access
to the real network through one of its interface through NAT or
bridged to the real network, again through a (real) interface.
To check your setup, start CMD in your host OS, Windows XP?, and run
ipconfig /all
write down the details unter "Ethernet ...Interface;", "Ethernet ...
Interface 2:" etc you have to look specifically at the manfacturere
to make sure which one is which: your cabled LAN(s) or wireless LAN.
Now decide through which interface your guest OS goes to the Internet
and through NAT or bridged. If you are just an end-user there's no
difference, may be with NAT the chances are better.
Now start VMware and check the settings of its (virtual) network
interface and if wrong, set according to the decisions made above.
Or come back with what you see in VMware.
