I have a small LAN
Windows 2000 server (PDC)
Windows CP Pro
Windows 2003 Standard (box was previously Windows2K)
I am using Speedtouch MultiUser ADSL gateway (DHCP and DNS enabled)
The WindowsXP box has been able to login into the Domain for ever.
I installed the Windows2003 (Obtain IP and DNS automatically) yesterday and
am unable to join the domain, the various help I have looked at talks about
needing a _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs record in netlogin.dns and I have tried
this - to no avail.
The box can ping the other 2 machines and can reach the internet, the
Speedtouch does not appear to be able to have SRV records.
Networks are not my thing - unfortunately, can anybody lend me a guiding
hand

Thanks,
Paul

In the past it was probably logging into the domain using NT-style login
using the Netbios name. This doesn't work with XP and W2k3. In W2k3 it tries
to log in using the SRV records in DNS. These only appear if your server is
running its own DNS server with dynamic DNS. Your client should be using
this machine for DNS, not your Internet router.

If you really want to run AD on your network, you will need to set it up
to use its own DNS, and configure the DNS to forward "outside" requests to
another DNS (such as your ISP). Client machines should use the AD DNS server
exclusively.

Thanks Bill,

I guess I have to learn about networking in Windows, or pay somebody to set
it up ;-)
