RAS won't start.

I have made a Server Rule for VPN on my Wk3 server. I went through the
install wizzard. Right off the bat, RAS won't start. I get a specific error
"8007042a" as an error. In the Event Viewer I get another error displayed
saying the the user did not have permission with specific error 691(0x2B3).

The server has two board-mounted Giga-bit NIC cards. I set card one as
Internet and card two as LAN.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did Event ID 20103 show up? If so, see this:
Routing and Remote Access Service does not start and event ID 20103 message
is logged:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q299013

It would be extermemely helpful if were to post the Event ID #s and the
Source for each error from the event logs to make it easier to lookup for
you. However, from a little deduction looking up the above error, it appears
there *may* be an issue elsewhere with TCP or something else going on. Can
you describe what else may be installed on this machine, is it a doma9in
controller, does it have DNS installed, is the firewall enabled, is there a
3rd party firewall (zone alarm?), what service pack is it, is IAS on the
machine, do you have ICS enabled, and what was the last thing that was
installed/changed/added/deleted/ etc etc etc. Any minor detail may be
helpful, even down to the point if you remember dropping a cigarette ash on
it. Leave nothing out.

Maybe TCPIP is corrupted and needs a reinstall:

Here are the facts:

Attempting to start RAS ...

Routing and Remote Access
Error: An error occurred while trying to start the Routing and Remote
Access service on SERVER2. For more information about the error, see Event
Viewer. (Right-click the My Computer icon on your Windows desktop, and then
click Manage. In the Computer Management Console, click Event Viewer.

Routing and Remort Access
Routing and Remote Access cannot be started because of the following error.
Please see event log for more information:
The service has returned a service-specific error code.
(8007042a)

Event Viewer
Event ID:7035
The Routing and Remote Access service was successfully sent a start control.

Event ID:7036
The Routing and Remote Access service entered the running state.

Event ID:20153
The currently configured accounting provider failed to load/initialize
successfully. Access was denied because the username and/or/password was
invalid on the domain.

Event ID:7036
The Routing and Remote Access service entered the stopped state.

Event ID:7024
The Routing and Remote Access service terminated with service-specific error
691 (0x2B3).

Server Roles:
File Server
Remote Access/VPN Server
Domain Controller (Active Directory)
DNS Server

I neglected to check on the service pack level, but the server was installed
in May of 2005, updated at the time to the current sp and patch level, and
has been updated monthly since.

The purpose of this server is mostly as a file server. I need to activate
the VPN so that remote users can gain access to files relevant to their work.
I also want to use VPN to connect to this server for off-site backup.
Currently, the server that is performing this function is old and is going to
be cycled out in 2006.

Thank you for posting specific info.

Unfortunately all the servers I've configured RRAS on (including VPN
servers), I have not seen this error. Most of the event log errors in your
case seem to be generic service start/stop errors, but I checked 20153,
which is more RRAS specific, and here is what I got from www.eventid.net's
site:

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?e...Access&phase=1

Did you configure IAS on this machine as well?

They suggest to (depending on IAS on the machine or not), to disable RRAS
and reanable it by doing it manually.

See if that article helped you out. Please post back with your (hopefully
successful) results.

Ace
