RAS\VPN\Outlook disconnecting

Have a single domain where remote users connect to a W2k3 sp1 server via RAS
and windows VPN (PPTP). They like to use Outlook (as opposed to OWA). In
the past week suddenly if Outlook connects at all it gets frequestly
disconnected while the VPN stays connected. I belive this to be a DNS or
Wins issue but am not sure. Broadcast name resolution is enabled on RAS.

In the past when a VPN connection was made, the remote PC would have access
to the network as if it were in the office, you could access shared drives,
make RDC connections to other PC's etc., now all it seems to be able to ping
or see is the VPN server itself.

Any idea what could be cauing this? The really wired thing about it is the
VPN server is also an Exchange server and some users who remote connect can't
get their Outlook to see that Exchange server even though they are VPN'd into
it. Could it be a bandwidth issue? Is there any way I could tell? Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks

It could be the name resolution issue. Can the VPN client ping the exchange server by name?

No I can only ping the server that the client is connected to via VPN and
then only by IP address. Ping by name or FQDN fails as well.

Hi,

I have following suggestions:

1. Check if you can access other share resource in domain after VPN was
established. (BY ip,Netbios name & FQDN)

2. Try cache mode and online mode both to see if this helps.

3. Check if this issue only happens to one fixed client. Check following
articles:

826159 HOW TO: Change the Default Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Size
Settings for PPP Connections or for VPN Connections
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;826159

875362 The Computer Browser service does not start and event ID 7024 is
logged when you restart your Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;875362

Recommended TCP/IP settings for WAN links with a MTU size of less than 576
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;900926

Hope this helps.

Cannot access other shared resources in the domain from client connected via
VPN.
Cache mode or online mode have same issues in Outlook.
Happens to ALL clients connect via VPN.
I will look at the articles.
Further research on the client connected via VPN, when ipconfig /all on the
PPP adapter (the VPN), it lists the default GW as the IP address of client
assigned from the domain DHCP. Shouldn't it be the default GW of the domain?

Any other help would be appreciated. Thanks

Read thru the articles, none seem to apply in this case. All this did work
correctly till last week.

Further research on client when connected via VPN. PPP adapter ipconfig
shows DHCP enabled = No. Maybe this explains why Default GW is IP addr of
client. Know any way to fix this? Around the time this happened, a W2k3 sp2
DC was added to doamin. Previously all W2K DC's would this have had
something to do with it? Thanks again

Hi,

As you said, a new Windows Server 2003 DC was added into domain? Did you
configured DNS service on it? Let's consider following things:

1. Run Ipconfig/all and take a screen shot.
2. Ping the DNS server by FQDN&IP to see if it works.
3. Run nslookup and take a screen shot.

Attach the screen shots to let me know the results.

I did nothing to DNS when adding this W2k3 sp2 DC to the domain. It was a
memeber server first.
When I ping by FQDN to this new DC it cannot find host, when I ping by IP it
times out. Win firewall is ON then DC. I have tried with F/W off but it
makes no difference.
Results are the same regaurdless of client or which VPN/RAS server I'm
using, I have created new RAS/VPN PPTP servers but result is same.

I have the screen shots but how do I post them in this forum? Cut and paste
doesn't work and I see no way to attach. Thanks
