RAS and DHCP Help

Our RAS server was configured using custom configuration allowing VPN access
and we did enable the DHCP relay agent which was default and we did make the
entry of DHCP server IP for DHCP relay agent.

Now our problem is whenever a client establishes the connection to our VPN
server, the client gets an IP address like 169.X.X.X

I was able to set a static scope on of ip addresses and when a client does
connect it get's the correct IP info.

I would love to get my hands wrapped around this and see why this is
happening and try to set this up using DHCP.

We had gone through many technical documents provided by MS and couldn't
find a solution which could solve our problem.

Please comment what we should do to get this nagging issue solved.

Thanks,

Where is your DHCP server? We found RAS might not work with 3rd party DHCP.

Robert,

My DHCP server is another windows 2003 server on my internal network. This
RAS box is connected to the domain and it's configured only for this service
to run remote access and that's it.

What should happen is that the RRAS server should lease a batch of IP
addresses from DHCP to use as its address pool. The clients do not get
their addresses directly from DHCP. If it is using APIPA addresses instead,
it means that it can't get the addresses it needs from DHCP.

Do you have plenty of addresses available in the scope? The number
needed varies but is at least ten. Anything in the event log about why the
RRAS server cannot get the addresses it needs?
