<RANT>

I just discovered that Tiscali is offering 12 MB uncapped for approx
20 GBP in Italy! And I still cannot get 1 MB ADSL in the UK
Join Europe? No, let's keep separate, and pay twice the amount for a
third of the service!

What has European politics got to do with current telecoms infrastructures?

Tiscali - dialup speeds at Broadband prices.
AOL - the unlimited ISP of choice for heavy downloaders.

And ?

Different country, different telecoms structure and infrastructures,
different altogether.

WTF has joining the EU got to do with ADSL availability?

If you want it so much, go to live in Italy.

Current telecoms infrastructures are a direct result of government
politics and policies (or lack thereof). Infrastructures do not grow
out of thin air, but have to be planned, funded and willed by the body
politic. If the political will is lacking, the infrastructures will
shine for their absence.

And infrastructurally (not just telecoms, but trains, food
distribution, etc), our beloved Blightly is lagging behind most other
EU member states. Allow me at least the right to ask why.

Going to live in Italy, as another poster "helpfully" suggested, does
not address the issue.

The lack of proper telecoms infrastructures affects _this_ country and
the 60 million people in it. If you are happy with paying through the
nose for a service which for others represents baseline, do nothing.

My business is suffering and I cannot compete in Europe because of the
ineptitude of powers up the line. And as this is getting way off topic
as it is, I apologize for my original burst of impatience while
waiting for the gracious enabling of my exchange to speeds which more
civilized nations had reached before we even woke up.

L.

food distribution ?

anyway, our ADSL coverage is better than anyone else I believe in % of
population terms. We can't do 12M ADSL yet because the rules of our
"open market" wholesale system haven't caught up with it, you can have
8M now which would be thing to compare against the italian offerring -
it is probably as widely available.
