I'm considering a wireless setup to add to an existing Ethernet home
network. First, the wireless laptop would be located about 30 feet
from cable modem. Can I just utilize an access point or do I need a
router? Also, the house is pretty small (1100 sq ft) Is there some way
I can limit or focus the range so as not to be vulnerable from outside
sniffers?

Thanks,

Bucky

Put a filter on the MAC address.

That will stop people connecting to your wifi, but not 'sniffing' the
packets from the air.
If that concerns you use WEP encryption.
