Rack mounted switch

Hello,

I'm not very familiar with rack mounted network stuff. I've been given
the task of trying to sort out a new office and I'm told that I will
need a 19 inch rack mounted switch to get the network going. That's
fine but when I search www.dabs.com for switches none of them are 19
inch, so what do I need?

Thanks,

Euan

The rack is referred to as 19", but the things that fit within are usually a
little over 17" wide (44cm). Among other reasons, this allows the addition of
side-mounted glide rails and still fit within the rack's hardpoints.

For one example of a rack mountable switch on the dabs site, see

Perhaps the web site you're using is designed for SOHO customers,
not IT staff. Rack-mount equipment will usually not be found among
consumer offerings, but should be available if you know where to
look. Try asking explicitly asking vendors for rack-mount switches
(they're priced at a level that should make a live salesdroid feel
the sale is worth his time to talk to a lowly customer).

I always buy rack mountable Netgear switches from CDW and they are not hard
to find, nor are they expensive. You probably have to buy 24 port switches
to fit racks.
